Inspiring Mentor Michelle Edelen: Advocating for the Empowerment and Excellence of Women

Shawn Fair Invites Latrea Russ Back Onstage for the Leadership Experience Tour

Shawn Fair has built a platform that enables motivational and inspirational speakers to reach a wider audience. Shawn continues to support people from different backgrounds share their stories and the lessons they have learned through his Leadership Experience Tour. He recently announced the next person to join the roster of accomplished speakers on this tour, and that is none other than Latrea Russ, founder of More Than My Disability.

Latrea Russ was born with Pfeiffer Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes the improper fusion of bones in the skull and other parts of the body. She also has hearing and vision impairments related to this disorder and has undergone over thirty surgeries to address various health concerns.

Her experience living with a disability inspired Latrea Russ to build More Than My Disability. She shared, “I understand first-hand what people with disabilities experience on a day-to-day basis. Though each of us is unique, we have a lot of similar experiences and problems. I wanted to show people with disabilities and the rest of the world that we are more than some label or diagnosis. We have a voice, and we have a purpose.”

More Than My Disability is a company that caters to the disability population differently. The company does not just work with young adults but also with parents who are disabled or who have children that are disabled. Her company provides job readiness training, self-esteem building, and workshops for parents of children with disabilities. “Navigating the world when you have a disability is always a unique challenge,” Latrea shared, “But with the training and services we provide, I hope that more people are better equipped to handle what life has in store for them.”

Her medical condition was not the only challenge Latrea Russ had to face. Because of drug-addicted parents, Latrea and her sister entered the foster care system when they were twelve and four years old, respectively. Unfortunately, throughout their time in the system, she and her sister encountered abuse. Fortunately, things changed for the better when Latrea turned sixteen, and she and her sister were adopted.

Her experiences have become a part of her, and while Latrea Russ has moved past them, they remain a significant part of her life. Latrea earned a BA in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Education. Later on, she became a Professional Certified Life Coach and certified in disabilities ministries. In addition, Latrea travels all over North Carolina to speak at events hosted by various disability organizations.

In 2019, she was a panelist on the Crazy Like a Fox Tour, a tour designed to spotlight mental health concerns in the Afro-American community. The following year, Coach Latrea joined The Exposure Network where she was given her own streaming channel Disability Insider, and show Uniquely Designed. “I used these platforms to provide society with an inside look into the lives and experiences of people with disabilities,” this life coach said, “And these shows also served as a platform for people to share their stories and have their voices be heard.” Aside from her speaking engagements and shows, Coach Latrea has also published eight books, one of her books, Intimate Conversations with God. This book was published in 2017 and was highlighted as an influential book at the NAACP convention.

Latrea Russ has had a significant positive impact on the disability community, using her story and experiences to uplift others. And her efforts to shed light on different disabilities have not gone unnoticed. Shawn Fair has trained over 300,000 leaders in the United States and abroad. His methods put him at the top of the training industry, and he has delivered hundreds of award-winning presentations. His coaching methods emphasize leading by example, mutual respect, establishing trust-based relationships, and giving praise where praise is due.

Shawn Fair founded the Leadership Experience Tour to help connect speakers with valuable knowledge and insight to a broader audience. So naturally, he only invites the best for these tours, and Latrea is the newest speaker on the roster. Latrea Russ is a life coach and disabilities advocate. She was recently chosen to join Shawn Fair’s Leadership Experience Tour program, one of the first persons with disability on this tour. Demanding More Than Climate Commitments from Councilmember Sophie Hahn

“I think this will send a very strong statement around our commitment to not only addressing climate impacts of agriculture but also addressing the broader moral issue of factory farming and the negative impact it has on animals in our society,” said Berkeley Mayor, Jesse Arreguin before adopting Vision 2025 for Sustainable Food Policies. The Vision 2025 resolution is in alignment with the previously adopted Green Monday program which recommends that the City of Berkeley replace 50% of animal-derived products with healthy plant-based foods in their food procurement for senior centers and other city-governed venues. But Berkeley Councilmember Sophie Hahn now argues that the city’s nearly $5 million annual food budget is not significant enough to deliver impactful environmental outcomes.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the global food sector generates 21-37% of the total anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Several reports estimate that the global livestock industry accounts for nearly 60% of agriculture GHG emissions, and 83% of farmland is used in order to generate only 18% of the world’s calorie supply. In Berkeley, our food sector accounts for 7 metric tons of GHG emissions per household. That is larger than vehicle fuel emissions. Berkeley Council, therefore, has adopted Green Monday, Good Food Purchasing Program (GFPP) and Vision 2025 resolutions in the last two years to address Berkeley’s consumption-based GHG emissions.

Moreover, Councilmember Sophie Hahn authored another resolution, Accelerating Transition to Plant-based Foods, just after the adoption of Vision 2025. It is very similar to Vision 2025, but commits to 50% plant-based shift in the city’s food procurement by 2024 along with an eventual goal of 100% shift to plant-based food products. The adoption of Accelerating Transition to Plant-based Foods became national headlines, praising Councilmember Hahn’s leadership in the sustainable food procurement.

According to the University of Michigan, a 50% plant-based shift that focuses on eliminating 90% of beef can reduce 51% of U.S. food emissions. Several national and international health organizations also recommend reducing or eliminating red and processed meat for public health. Therefore, Nilang Gor and others are proposing a new Food Procurement Ordinance building upon the previous resolutions to begin prohibiting the procurement of red and processed meats. Councilmember Hahn had initially praised this ordinance draft by calling it a “robust proposal” and said that she would consider it for fall submission. But Councilmember Hahn is now denying to sponsor the Food Procurement Ordinance because she thinks the City of Berkeley does not purchase a significant amount of food. This is in contradiction to her GFPP resolution that reports the City of Berkeley’s nearly $5 million annual food budget.

Moreover, when Berkeley Climate Equity Fund asked about the implementation of Green Monday, which requires serving 100% plant-based meals once a week. Councilmember Hahn gave multiple excuses on social media for the lack of implantation. First, she blamed preoccupied staff during COVID-19, which does not consider that Green Monday was adopted before the pandemic in 2019. She then tried to justify that the Senior Centers focus on plant-based options for their Tuesday meals. However, their menu options are made with eggs and dairy.

On 28th October, Nilang Gor met with Councilmember Hahn at the Farmers’ Market to deliver a letter signed by collaborators and allies in support of the proposed ordinance. But Councilmember Hahn focused on talking about her frustration with being criticized on Twitter. Councilmember Hahn declined to work with Nilang Gor on the proposed ordinance due to his calls for accountability on social media. These public criticisms are within every citizen’s right under the First Amendment to hold government accountable. Not only is Hahn’s response disappointing and counterproductive to the larger goal of curbing climate change, it is unconstitutional to threaten community members as punishment for holding elected representatives accountable. Now, Councilmember Hahn has been contacted by a law firm, Parker Stanbury, demanding to work with Nilang Gor in good faith, despite any posts or other communication by him criticizing Councilmember Hahn on social media or any other forum.

According to recent UN reports, we are tasked with reducing 45% of our carbon and methane emissions by 2030 in order to limit global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius. As a city that has declared a climate emergency, Berkeley needs to recognize that meat emissions alone exceed natural gas emissions. We must prioritize sustainability in our food sector as much as building and vehicle electrification. We must acknowledge that how we spend our annual food budget has direct impacts on our environment, community health, environmental racism and animal welfare. Let’s all come together, collaborate and implement the best solutions to secure a safe future for our planet!

California Charity Spotlight: the Los Angeles Tribune Announces Initiatives for 2022

The Los Angeles Tribune announced that heading into the new year there will be a series of initiatives that the National News Brand will be implementing to address community related problems and provide solutions as a local business leader.

Moving into the new year with an emphasis on community involvement, the Los Angeles Tribune is proud to announce that they are official strategic partners with Food Finders Inc, an organization that has been a staple in the southern california community for over three decades. This partnership will be focused on making sure the community of Southern California is aware of the facts of chronic hunger and ways to make a practical difference.

Current statistics show chronic hunger affects about 1 in 5 Californians. This includes people who are unemployed, low income, and living in food deserts. Some have limited access to food due to poor transportation or lack of resources.Recent data from the California Association of Food Banks indicates nearly 10 million residents are affected by food insecurity statewide. When an individual is food insecure it means they are unsure of where their next meal is coming from.

We strive to reduce that statistic. Since its inception, Food Finders has grown from rescuing several thousand pounds of food to rescuing millions of pounds of food annually. With the contributions of hundreds of food donors, including L.A. produce mart, grocery stores, corporate kitchens, schools, and other businesses, our program provides food to more than 500 nonprofit partners across five counties.

Every day, Food Finders saves thousands of pounds of food from the waste bin. We don’t mean scraps, but perfectly edible food that is still nutritious. Not only do we ensure food gets where it’s needed, but we also help businesses save on disposal fees while providing a way to give back to the community. Donated food is provided to pantries, shelters, and other nonprofits within the same area it’s from. Unlike food banks, we rescue and redistribute all food the same day, delivering direct from donor to recipient, free of charge.

Equally important, food rescue makes a positive impact on our planet.

About Food Finders:

Since 1989 Food Finders has been rescuing donated food across Southern California with a mission to reduce food insecurity while preventing wholesome food from filling landfills. Food is immediately redistributed to a network of nonprofit partner agencies to help feed individuals in need. We achieve this by staying true our core values: Community, Responsibility, Adaptability, and Integrity.

About the LA Tribune:

The Los Angeles Tribune is a historical name in the media. First introduced to the general public in 1886, it is one of the longest lasting names in the industry. They have a company mission to redefine news and proclaim an emphasis on integrity, authenticity and responsibility.

Luis Manta Successfully Formulates a Power Beverage with Only Three Ingredients

Imagine a healthy all-natural beverage that is both refreshing and has the unique ability to keep its consumers hydrated. This is the kind of beverage that college athlete turned entrepreneur Luis Manta offers with his incredible product, Seoul Juice. Made up of only three natural and healthy ingredients with zero preservatives, it has captured the loyalty of multiple consumers, both athletes and non-athletes alike. Aside from being healthy and nourishing, it also has a delicious taste that appeals to so many kinds of consumers.

Seoul Juice’s main ingredient is the Korean pear, also called the Asian or Nashi Pear, which is best known for its natural ability to replenish electrolytes. Each 16.9 oz bottle of it is composed of 300 mg of potassium that can get people going all day, most especially if they are active individuals. This is approximately the same amount of sugar and potassium that people get from coconut water. Comparatively, it has less sugar compared to apple juice, making it a favorite among moms who want their children to consume healthy beverages only.

Luis Manta’s search for the perfect healthy drink led him to a path that he did not expect. “I started to look for only natural products as I wanted to put only the best ingredients in my body. This led me to start using coconut water to hydrate, but I absolutely hated the taste and was tired of forcing myself to down the product,” Luis Manta shared.

“I then decided I wanted to create a beverage for athletes that not only helped them perform at their best, but that also tasted amazing. I had the benefit of being able to test out formulations with my teammates and friends in order to come up with the ideal product. And that’s what our customers get to drink today—a great-tasting beverage made of just three natural ingredients,” he added.

Today, Seoul Juice is a sensation, to say the least. Luis Manta and his team are especially happy about their Bay Area retail partners, who have been instrumental in helping them get the product out into the market. The juice is also available at United Markets, Market on Market, and Queens, SF. Starting January 2022, Seoul Juice will also be a regular at all Boba Guy restaurants. San Francisco is also currently a hub for Seoul Juice, with its popularity rising each passing day. Mostly, the products’ expansion pushed through due to the high demand from consumers who believe in its value.

Interestingly, San Francisco has proven to be a very lucrative area for Seoul Juice. This comes as a welcome development for Luis Manta, whose parents both finished college in the area. It has always been a special place for him to visit, even as a young boy, and seeing how it has embraced his product means a lot to him and his team. Thanks to the ever-supportive locals, Seoul Juice is now the talk of the town.

The current success of Seoul Juice is only the beginning of what Luis Manta envisions to be a long-term venture that will keep consumers healthy and hydrated. His goal is to introduce the product to as many people as possible across the country. With his incredible team behind him, he is confident that the years ahead of Seoul Juice will remain productive and exciting.

Former Actress Turned Momtrepreneur Celebrates the Release of Memoir About the Joys and Hurdles of Motherhood and Entrepreneurship

“Generations have grown up believing in the American Dream—that optimism and hard work will eventually pay off. That’s how author Adrienne Alitowski approached the invention and marketing of her product blankyclip—a cute, useful toy to keep stroller blankets in place. What began as a bright idea turned nightmarish in the face of corporate realities and a global recession. With winning humor and refreshing candor, Alitowski spins a universal cautionary tale about what is and what isn’t in our control. And ultimately, what really matters.”

-Sheri Holman, Best-Selling Author of The Dress Lodger and Screenwriter for Longmire.

When former actress turned momtrepreneur Adrienne Alitowski first ventured into motherhood, she had no idea the adventures it would come with. From sleepless nights with a newborn to inventing and launching a brand new baby product in stores across the nation, Alitowski knew her story as a new mom, and small business owner was unique.

In her bestselling memoir, Clipped: A mom invents a way to hold herself together just as the world is falling apart, Alitowski takes her readers on an emotional, humorous, and relatable journey through the most transformational moments in her life.

Clipped starts with the birth of Adrienne’s son, Eli. She explains that he was a baby who would “only sleep whenever he was on the go.” His eyes were covered, so needless to say; she was constantly pushing a stroller while attempting to keep a blanket expertly positioned over Eli’s stroller.

Alitowski expresses her frustration about the constant adjustments the blanket needed to stay over her son’s eyes to keep him asleep. Desperate for her baby to get some much-needed sleep and for her to get some sleep herself, Alitowski scoured the internet for something that would hold a blanket to a stroller to find nothing that met safety requirements and aesthetics.

“If I could buy so much of what I needed (and so much more that I didn’t) to make this mommy gig go smoothly, why couldn’t I buy a clip that was safe for babies and could keep the darn blanket from falling off the stroller,” she writes.

After searching for days, she realized that the product didn’t exist… yet.

On a Tuesday in February, while taking her son on a walk, Alitowski realized that just because she couldn’t find the product, that didn’t mean she couldn’t invent it.

From that mindset, the idea for blankyclip was born, and an expedition toward production kicked off. An expedition that would bring severe discussions of licensing, sales channels, utility patents, and business plans, spanning the United States and across the world in Hong Kong and China.

Alitowski recounts her experiences with trying to get blankyclip produced, rejection from potential buyers, and what it was like to be the “little guy” during the Great Recession of 2008. Her pain and frustration are palpable through the words she has carefully chosen to fill her memoir.

Clipped is an honest story filled with contagious passion and fierce determination to produce a product that will make parents’ lives easier. Throughout her memoir, Alitowski expresses her emotions, triumphs, and struggles candidly, which has drawn a diverse audience of all ages to the pages of Clipped.
