WeWork: Inside the former CEO’s $1bn new startup

Adam Neumann is reportedly in command of a billion-dollar real estate firm, close to three years after he left WeWork as CEO after the company’s unsuccessful IPO attempt.

According to The New York Times, which cited unnamed sources briefed on the transaction, Andreessen Horowitz, a renowned venture capital firm best known for its early investments in Twitter and Airbnb, has invested around $350 million in Neumann’s newest endeavor, dubbed Flow. The article claims that the startup was valued at more than $1 billion by the investment.

Flow or Andreessen Horowitz representatives did not immediately answer inquiries for comment.

The investment was disclosed in a blog post on Monday by Marc Andreessen, general partner and co-founder of the venture capital firm. In addition, he stated why he decided to support Neumann and Flow, a residential real estate firm, despite the founder’s well-publicized fall from grace at WeWork.

Andreessen described Adam as a visionary leader who brought community and brand to a sector where neither had existed, revolutionizing commercial real estate, the second-largest asset class in the world. In addition, he noted that the histories of Adam and WeWork had been well documented, examined, and fictionalized—occasionally with correct results. The fact that only one person, Adam Neumann, dramatically altered the office experience and oversaw the creation of a paradigm-shifting international corporation is sometimes overlooked despite the effort expended in covering the tale.

Flow’s intended revolutionization of the residential housing sector is not immediately apparent. However, live life in flow is the motto of Flow’s current sparse website, which also contains the phrases “2023 Launch” and “Live life in flow.”

Andreessen promoted the new company as the long-awaited answer to the “housing catastrophe” facing the country. To describe how the new firm would “build a system where renters obtain the benefits of owners,” he used a variety of jargon-filled words, including “community-driven, experience-centric service.”

How Neumann took WeWork to new heights

WeWork experimented with gyms, a school, and housing under Neumann’s direction as it grew from elaborately perks-shared coworking spaces. The most recent of these initiatives, WeLive, allowed users to rent a bed or a private room in a coliving setting with common rooms open for yoga, ping-pong, and other activities.

At its peak, WeWork was valued at $47 billion on the private market. WeWork then made a disastrous attempt to go public, which was largely thwarted by IPO paperwork that exposed Neumann’s unrestrained power, several possible conflicts of interest, and WeWork’s huge losses. The WeWork board ultimately decided to remove Neumann as CEO, but he left with an exit deal reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

A television program that featured Neumann in part as the epitome of startup culture’s excesses was inspired by WeWork’s stunning initial attempt to go public and meteoric ascent.

The special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, under which WeWork ultimately went public, was founded in 2021. Right now, WeWork is worth around $4 billion on the market.

Yemen Café & Restaurant | Serving Patrons And Exotic Homes

Yemen Café & Restaurant is a restaurant that offers patrons sustenance, exotic dishes, and Yemenite hospitality. Established in 1975, the restaurant has been operating as a staple of the local community for decades. Exotic flavors have been drawing in patrons since its opening and continues to do so to this day.

Yemen Café & Restaurant Location

Yemen Cafe & Restaurant was founded in 1975 by Sana and Naim Salah. The restaurant’s name is derived from its location on the corner of 69th Street and San Vicente Blvd in Los Angeles. When Sana and Naim first opened their doors, they had a basic cafe serving coffee, tea, and sandwiches. As time passed by, the owners would add bakery items to the menu such as baklava. This addition helped increase sales in their business. Yemen Café is known for its exotic and well-season flavors. Sana and Naim have been operating their business as a staple of the local community, serving patrons regardless of their religious affiliation or race. The Salah family has been operating Yemen Café ever since its establishment, continuing to provide patrons with the same Yemenite hospitality that they have been providing from the start.

Yemen Cafe’s exotic flavors are season by keeping it a family-owned and operated business. Sana and Naim are two of the four members of the Salah family who started their business together. Sana’s parents opened Yemen Café after Sana married Naim right after high school graduation. When Sana and Naim first opened the doors, they only served traditional foods such as falafel, hummus, and baklava. The two were traine by local Arab chefs in preparing these items to give patrons exactly what they were looking for.

Sana and Naim’s business has expanded in recent years to include the addition of a full-scale buffet. This addition helped to increase menu sales because customers can now enjoy a wider variety of exotic, Yemeni treats. The restaurant has seen steady growth over the years and is still doing so to this day. In 2005, Sana and her sisters opened a second location in Burbank as Yemen Café & Bakery. In 2012, another sister married into the business, further expanding their business operations outside of Los Angeles.

Yemen Café & Bakery has become a staple of the local community, reaching past the borders of Los Angeles and into other states. The restaurant is love by patrons, regardless of their religious affiliation or race. The Salah family has continued to provide that same Yemenite hospitality they first started with when they opened their doors over 38 years ago. There have also been many big time celebrities who have visited Yemen Café & Bakery as guests of Sana and Naim. Sana Salah has also been feature in many ethnic newspapers such as Al-Awst and Al-Sabaah. The media has praised Sana for her delicious food, Yemenite hospitality, and her contribution to the local community.

Yemen Café & Restaurant is a featured restaurant of the month in the food section of the LA Weekly on February 27, 2015. Yemen Cafe is an “as authentic as it gets” Middle Eastern eatery featuring traditional cuisine from all corners of the Arabian Peninsula. Featured are Sana Salah’s favorite recipes including meat and dairy dishes, appetizers, desserts and sweetmeats, local curiosities, and drinks.

La Panaderia: The New Icon of Pan Dulce

San Antonio, Texas, was originally founded as the state’s first civil settlement and Spanish outpost. To this day, the city is heavily influenced by Mexican American culture, which is evident in the traditions and foods you find in the city.

One such place is La Panaderia, and we recently had the pleasure of sitting down with the founders, brothers David and Jose Caceres, to learn more about them and their culinary offerings.

For those of you who have never heard of pan dulce, it’s a type of “sweet bread” from Mexico that comes in hundreds of flavor variations, from cinnamon and strawberry to vanilla and La Panaderia’s own Tequila Almond Croissant.

We asked the brothers what pan dulce is to them, and Jose explained, “Pan dulce is our biggest culinary, cultural, and bakery contribution to the world. It is to us what panettone is to Italy or Venusaur is to France. So, to us, pan dulce is a blend of cultures.”

And thanks in large part to social media, the popularity of these pastries is once again on the rise.

Yet, David also believes the increased interest is also due to, “The creativity of the Mexican bakery. When people think of pan dulce, they think of conchas, but actually, there is more than a thousand types of pan dulce over all of Mexico.”

In fact, there are somewhere between 500 and 1,000 variations made in Mexico today. Though La Panaderia doesn’t serve every variety, they have some of the most popular, including David’s own creation, the Tequila Almond Croissant.

The good news for the Caceres brothers is that the bakery’s name pops up everywhere when you conduct a simple internet search for pan dulce. We wanted to know what they do that’s different from all the other panaderias in the United States, and the answer may surprise you!

“First of all, we have been working for several decades with bakers from all over the world: French bakers, German, Italian, and pretty much all over. And what we have created is that outcome, the blend of cultures that reflects all that influence. Also, we work with innovation. We push everything to the limits.”

Of course, one example of this is the tequila almond croissant, which was even a big hit with Guy Fieri when he visited the bakery during season 27 of his show.

“It is really luxurious,” Fieri said after trying one. “There’s not too much almonds. There’s not too much sugar. It’s the right balance.”

Yet, this specialty is only one small part of their offerings. La Panadería also serves conchas, mini conchas, bear claws, sweet empanadas, oreja, many flavors of croissants, and much more.

It’s apparent that the culture of pan dulce takes a great deal of passion because so much goes into it.

“Our family, from our background,” David shared when asked where he draws his passion. “We have been baking since we were children. We were around a bakery all our lives, so that’s definitely a passion that comes from inside.”

He continued on to explain that creativity is not something that you can just wake up from bed and achieve. At times you’ll have all the inspiration needed to create things, but other times, it’s harder to attain.

And for the Caceres brothers, travel is another place where inspiration and creativity are drawn upon. Having access to different people, books, and ideas is vital for them and really helps new ideas be born.

Their admiration and passion for sharing their culture have gained them commercial success and social media attention. But perhaps the most impressive part is that David’s vision has helped him attain the status of Chef Ambassador to the city of San Antonio. This is one title he’s thrilled to have, as it allows him to continue his journey with the culinary traditions of his family and city.

For now, Jose and David will continue doing what they love, which is providing their city with pan dulce and adding new creations to their menu. Next time you’re in the city, stop by and grab one of La Pandaderia’s delicious snacks, and you may just get to meet one of the brothers behind the perfection.

And one thing is for sure, what these brothers are doing is making them the go-to resource for the next evolution of pan dulce!

“We listened to our clients and anticipated an evolution to automated storage solutions. Our capabilities and services expanded to get the companies we serve ready for the future. We are proud to call ourselves an industry leader in automated storage solutions”, says the McMurray Stern website.

McMurray Stern’s integrated design process ensures that projects are managed from start to finish, guaranteeing that clients are left with an improved workflow and increased efficiency in managing time, space, information, and materials.

From grocery stores to military facilities, McMurray Stern works with a variety of industries to ensure a more productive workflow. No project is too big or too unique for McMurray Stern to tackle, leaving every client with an individualized solution to their company’s needs and concerns.

The future of storage is vertical. Automated storage and retrieval solutions allow businesses to utilize the height of their spaces, creating a higher storage density. According to the McMurray Stern blog, vertical storage solutions are essential because they “can double or triple the amount of storage space available without moving locations or changing your current layout”. With the help of verticle life modules (VLMs) and lift & runs, businesses do not even need to lift a finger to retrieve items from their vertical storage solutions, taking businesses to new heights while also improving accuracy and speed.

While many companies are looking to automate their warehouses, it takes a lot of planning to make it possible. McMurray Stern is there for companies looking to make the switch, and helps businesses evaluate the four main factors that go into an automated warehouse: space, accuracy, labor, and throughput. McMurray Stern ensures that it will help companies find the best solutions for the space available, all while improving business.

There are many hidden advantages for choosing to go automated. For one, automated warehouses create better living conditions for employees. The digital transformation almost eliminates any danger that comes with a warehouse job like lifting heavy machinery or handling dangerous chemicals. Not only that, but businesses are able to keep up with the increase in demand that has come as an effect of the Covid-19 pandemic. Automated warehouses allow for companies to create a faster, more accurate way to handle customer demands.

Companies are greatly benefiting from the innovation at McMurray Stern. While it can seem intimidating to get started, McMurray Stern offers free consultations to help businesses begin their automated storage solution journey. By choosing from a 15-minute, 30-minute, or 1-hour consultation, McMurray Stern will help map out the next necessary steps in order to maximize the potential of a company. In the consultation, clients meet with Pat Fitzpatrick, vice president of sales and marketing at McMurray Stern and manufacturing expert.

McMurrary Stern is moving companies into the 21st century with their innovative storage solutions. Tackling modern problems like supply chain issues, post Covid-19 demand, and labor shortages, McMurray Stern is helping companies keep up with the speed and demand of the digital age.

Goodbye Lawns, Hello Home Ecosystems

Last summer, the temperature in the California Desert peaked at 122 degrees fahrenheit — so hot that your fingers burned if you stuck your hand out of the car window. By then, the water level of Lake Mead, the major reservoir servicing California, was already at record lows and the whole of the west coast was in the midst of an historic, highly-visible drought. Meanwhile, the Coachella Valley remained its familiar self — hundreds of pristine golf courses and mile after mile of perfectly manicured, emerald green lawns.

No one had yet heard of water restrictions, nor did anyone seem to care much. Thanks to a century-old agreement, the desert has first dibs on the Colorado River.

It is well-known, but rarely acknowledged, that the grass used in most residential lawns is an extremely thirsty plant. Largely because of its lust for water, grass makes for a terrible neighbor, not only draining wells and reservoirs, but starving other plants like trees of rainwater. Over the past several years, there have been multiple anti-grass movements, from “Kill Your Lawn” to the less drastic “No Mow May.” Like weeds, however, lawns have proven hard to kill. Most Americans grew up with a turfgrass lawn; sentimentally, they want one for their kids and pets to enjoy too.

Yet, studies have shown a growing interest in more ecologically-friendly yards. For example, a 2021 survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) revealed that roughly 80% of  landscape clients were interested in “climate solutions” — a marked increase from just the year before. Adding to this, the International Casual Furnishings Association conducted a national survey the same year showing that 88% of people are unsatisfied with their outdoor space and want gardens and fruit trees, rather than just grass.

The shift in priorities is not just a matter of conservation, either. All of those lawn care chemicals needed to keep turfgrass lawns their staple emerald green color are highly toxic. Native plants, meanwhile, never need to be mowed or sprayed, and some — like creeping thyme and asiatic jasmine — make great evergreen groundcover.

Justin West, co-founder and CEO of Thrive Lot, a home ecosystem platform and company based in the Bay Area, is convinced that most Californians want change, but they need to understand the possibilities before delving into a state of lawn-lessness. “People aren’t going to accept the status quo anymore,” says West. “They want to know the impact that their surroundings have on their health and the health of the planet. When they investigate turfgrass lawns, they find that it’s nothing but invasive species, high-emissions maintenance, heavy chemical use and water waste. People would rather be surrounded by lush beauty, feel self-sufficiency and health, and contribute to feeding bees, birds and butterflies.”

Rather than emphasizing the negative, Thrive Lot focuses attention on the benefits of ecologically-designed home landscapes and environments. West often tells clients how diverse, dense, mature ecosystems create incredible value for homes and communities, while native perennial pollinator habitats are cheaper and easier to maintain than turfgrass. But the benefits of going native go beyond cost, and even beyond nature. Studies have shown that children not exposed to truly natural spaces are 55% more likely to develop mental and social disorders.

Thrive Lot is now connecting homeowners across the Bay Area to native landscape experts, but West has advice for D-I-Yers as well. “The first thing people can do is start building real soil and change their turfgrass and invasive ornamental landscaping out for native, perennial, drought tolerant plants. Although, they should keep in mind that xeriscaping is not the solution — it’s more desertification.”

Xeriscaping is a landscaping approach that eliminates the need for irrigation. It has become a popular option as many Californians work to adapt their lifestyles to what is beginning to feel like permanent drought. West says that because organic matter holds water in the soil, native plants and trees actually help to prevent drought.

“What homeowners should focus on instead of getting rid of the naturally occurring fauna and flora,” he says, “is creating a sustainable ecosystem.”

Amazon bows to UAE pressure to restrict LGBTQ search results

Amazon is the latest Western company to be compelled by a non-European government to censor its content. The UAE government forced Amazon to start suppressing search results for more than 150 LGBTQ-related keywords in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to The New York Times, which cited company records on Wednesday.

According to The Times, the UAE government gave the e-commerce behemoth until Friday to abide by its request to suppress LGBTQ-related search results and threatened to sanction Amazon if it did not. However, the reason the Emirati government requested that LGBTQ-related search results be removed from Amazon was not stated in the report.

On Thursday, several searches were made on Amazon.ae, the UAE’s version of the retailer, using various LGBTQ-related keywords. Several of the searches produced no results or mentions. “LGBTQ,” “pride,” and “queer” were a few that didn’t turn up anything. On Thursday, Insider discovered that some books that were accessible through Amazon’s US store—including Maia Kobabe’s “Gender Queer: A Memoir” and Jacob Tobia’s “Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story”—were not accessible through Amazon’s UAE site.

The exclusion of search results for some LGBTQ-related search phrases on Amazon appears to have been circumvented. For example, a writing notebook called “Pride Story Paper Book” with a rainbow flag on the cover was listed when Insider searched for “rainbow flag.” When the term “same-sex” was searched, paper plates and napkins with the words “Mr & Mr” printed on them were listed.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker, André Aciman’s “Call Me By Your Name,” and the children’s book “Same but Different Too: The Colourful Life” by Naomi y Kissiedu-Green and Chris Laxton were among the LGBTQ-themed books that UAE-based users could still search for.

According to a US State Department report published in April, same-sex sexual activity is illegal in the UAE, and LGBTQ representation is severely restricted.

A representative for Amazon acknowledged that the business had limited some search results on its Amazon.ae site. Efforts for a response from the UAE embassy in Singapore were not immediately answered.

After purchasing the Dubai-based e-commerce platform Souq.com, Amazon entered the UAE in 2017. This allowed the Seattle-based company to bypass regulatory approvals and begin doing business there. According to a press statement from the firm from May 2021, Amazon’s cloud computing division intended to open three data centers in the nation this year.

Many Silicon Valley behemoths have yielded to government pressure in exchange for the freedom to operate in certain markets. According to a May 2016 Times investigation, Apple purportedly kept consumer data on Chinese servers and restricted apps there. According to Apple, which assured the Times that customer data was secure, it complied with Chinese regulatory standards. According to the Financial Times, Netflix also pulled a Saudi Arabian comedy program episode that made fun of the country in 2019.

Evolving rapidly and being a center for opportunities, the media and entertainment industry continues to attract creatives with varying personalities and backgrounds. And although competition is fierce and the pressure to make a name for oneself is high, award-winning filmmaker and entrepreneur Brennan Strader is constantly rising to the challenge of securing a coveted spot at the top of the industry.

Brennan Strader discovered his passion for the craft at a very young age, intrigued by the prospect of bringing an idea to life through film. Since then, he has been working relentlessly to learn more than just the fundamentals of videography. At 16, he landed his first large project with a notable oil and gas company, Shell. Working with the brand’s team to create an infomercial made Brennan realize that his passion for content creation is not only a source of income but can also provide a platform for businesses to reach a wide range of audiences and consumers. This partnership opened up new windows of opportunity for Brennan’s career to flourish.

However, Brennan’s journey towards the peak of his career had to take a backseat when he decided to serve on a mission trip in Wisconsin. When he returned after two years, he found himself at a loss with no money and camera equipment and ended up having to start from scratch. So, he dropped out of school and used his college tuition to buy a car and camera equipment to restart his filming business. Although a huge risk, Brennan dug himself out of the trenches to give his dream of building his dream video agency another chance.

Brennan’s perseverance paid off as he managed to form new connections with several prominent business owners and investors who eventually mentored him. As a result, he was able to receive access to hundreds of thousands of dollars in capital, enough for him to establish a number of ventures. For three years, he learned the ins and outs of the business industry through startup and scaling a health and wellness brand, a food storage company, and dabbling in real estate. Then, with the brand new knowledge in business management and marketing experience Brennan gained over the last few years, he identified a new skill set that became his foundation for creating his own digital media company.

From being a freelancer to becoming a full-time business owner, Brennan’s passion for creating has always been the driving force that propelled him to greater heights in his career. Currently, he owns Capture Films, a creative agency based in Provo, Utah, specializing in video, photo, and animation.
