In the legal field, Annesley DeGaris is a remarkable figure who has made his mark through decades of distinguished legal practice. Beyond his extensive legal career, DeGaris has also educated and mentored countless legal minds through his tenure as a law professor at multiple law schools. Additionally, he contributed extensively to legal literature that has shaped legal frameworks and gained recognition through numerous honors and awards, proving his imprint on the realm of law.

Early Education and Career

DeGaris began his studies in Birmingham, Alabama, receiving a bachelor’s degree in science from Samford University. He continued his studies there to receive his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law while also editing law reviews there. DeGaris completed his studies in Australia at the University of Melbourne Law School, earning his LL.M. with a concentration in international law. In collaboration with his prior law education, receiving the Rotary Foundation Scholarship for International Understanding demonstrated the in-depth and encompassing education that has built a foundation for DeGaris’ diverse career.

DeGaris’ career started as a law clerk for United States District Court Judge E. B. Haltom.  Later, he was appointed as a Staff Attorney to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Atlanta, Georgia, where he contributed significantly to researching and drafting legal opinions. He then served as an Associate at Johnson & Cory in Birmingham, Alabama, concentrating on various aspects of complex civil trial practice. 

After serving as a founding partner in the law firm Cory, Watson, Crowder, and DeGaris for nearly two decades (1995-2014), DeGaris went on to truly define his career. In 2015, DeGaris founded DeGaris Law, LLC, specializing in personal injury, wrongful death, and mass tort litigation involving defective medical devices and pharmaceutical drugs. DeGaris’ commitment to justice and advocacy has led him to operate under various firm names, including DeGaris & Rogers, LLC, with his former classmate D. Wayne Rogers.

Experience as a Professor and Mentor

Beyond his litigation career, DeGaris has also made significant contributions to the legal education of aspiring attorneys. As a professor at the Birmingham School of Law (1993-2011, 2024), he played a crucial role in shaping students’ academic experiences. Throughout his tenure, he conducted courses covering diverse legal subjects, including Constitutional Law, Agency and Partnership, and Federal Civil Procedure.

He extended his educational influence as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and Emory University School of Law. Focusing on teaching Criminal Law at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and Research, Writing, and Appellate Advocacy at Emory University School of Law, DeGaris has played a crucial role in shaping the minds of aspiring lawyers. 

Currently, DeGaris is an adjunct professor at Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham. He teaches courses in Complex Civil Litigation and Alabama Civil Practice and Procedure, imparting his knowledge and experience to students as a professor and mentor.

Furthering Expertise Through Advocacy

DeGaris’ advocacy of legal education extends beyond his law practice and time in academia. He has been a sought-after speaker at various legal seminars and conferences. His engagements range over multiple legal topics, including mass tort litigation, multidistrict litigation, and judges’ role in settling disputes. Through these speaking engagements, DeGaris has contributed to disseminating knowledge, exchanging ideas, and advancing legal practice and understanding among his peers.

In addition, DeGaris is an accomplished author with an extensive publication record. His writings encompass various legal subjects, from the constitutionality of legislation to product liability litigation. DeGaris has provided valuable insights into emerging legal issues through his articles in reputable publications, such as “Seeing Red: China Plays by the Rules” and “An Introduction to Multidistrict Litigation: Practice and Procedure.” His scholarly work has enriched legal discourse and provided valuable insights for legal practitioners and scholars.

Throughout his career, Annesley DeGaris has received numerous accolades and honors that reflect his work. His contributions to the legal community and its education have garnered recognition on both local and national levels. He was named a Topflight Attorney by B-Metro Living in 2020 and holds a decades-running AV Preeminent Peer Review Rating from Martindale Hubbell. His accomplishments include being recognized as Lawyer of the Year for Mass Tort Litigation and Class Action by Best Lawyers in America in multiple years, including 2013, 2014, and 2022. Additionally, DeGaris is a Life Member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and has been recognized as one of Birmingham’s leading attorneys by Birmingham Magazine.
