Trees are a natural part of a property’s landscape. They provide shade, homes to birds and wildlife, and curb appeal. However, as advantageous as trees are to our property, their root system could create havoc. Here are seven ways tree roots negatively impact and affect a property and how to determine when it’s time to have them professionally removed.
1. Foundation Problems
Roots can cause direct and indirect types of foundation problems. Roots move the soil under the foundation while they grow. It is the dislodging of soil that causes foundation problems. Roots need food and water, and if the foundation already has cracks, they can cause them to grow large while looking for water.
2. Surface Roots
Roots that come to the surface not only look unsightly, but they are hazardous. Kids running around the yard can easily trip and fall over the roots. Surface roots make landscaping difficult, too.
3. Invasion of Water and Sewer Lines
Tree roots can damage pipes, including water and sewer lines. The roots can grow through pipe openings and clog or break a pipe. If the pipes are old and are starting to crack, roots can enlarge the cracks, causing the pipes to fail. Once tree roots have invaded a pipe system, the only way to remove the roots is to replace the pipes.
4. Root Heave
Root heave occurs when tree roots grow underground and cause pressure on the pavement on top of them. As they become bigger and stronger, they push upward, looking for water and food. The act causes sidewalks, driveways, and patios to crack and become uneven.
5. Damaged Roots
It is not always the growing roots causing problems. Sometimes, root systems become damaged. Unfortunately, it may take some time before a tree shows signs of root damage. Trees with damaged roots can cause trees to fall and damage homes, buildings, and property.
6.Plant Competition
Trees do their part to add beauty to our yards. However, the ground around the trees is often plain and unsightly. Many people choose to plant flowers and other plants at the base of the trees. This is often a mistake. Tree roots will compete for the same water and nutrients as the plants. Roots will win in the long run, causing the plants to die.
7. Irrigation Issues
If your sprinkler head is spraying in a different direction or water pressure seems to be low, it is a sign that tree roots are the problem. Nearby tree roots can get tangled up with the sprinkler lines, causing the water pressure to drop. Some roots are strong enough to break the lines altogether. The problem is trees rely on that water for survival.
When to Remove Tree Roots
Some tree root problems are treatable, but not all of them. If tree roots are diseased, causing property damage, or are a safety risk, it is time to consider removal. Consulting a professional may be the first step when determining when to remove the roots.
