We are now firmly in the Information Age, and the Internet has had a profound effect on society and our daily lives. Today’s world is fast-paced, both in industry and personal lives, and staying connected is a must. Fitness trackers, tablets, and smartphones are all necessary for conducting regular business and keeping track of our households in modern society. Here are three reasons why wireless connectivity is so essential to daily life.

1. Communication and Productivity

Wireless devices allow us to connect with anyone, anywhere, at any time. Families living apart from each other can talk, text, or video chat when they want, and businesses utilizing connectivity solutions now allow for remote work and collaboration across the globe. Task management apps and communications enhance productivity in this mobile work environment by allowing team participants from anywhere to contribute to ongoing projects. Wireless technology, coupled with cloud computing, enhances productivity and communication through shared online space. Many of the connected devices we use also come with onboard calendar and reminder applications, office suites, and other applications that help keep us on track and productive.

2. Health and Wellness

Wireless technology is revolutionizing the healthcare industry. Patients may now use wireless devices such as smartphones and tablets to conduct telehealth visits with their doctors, and internet-enabled monitoring devices now allow patients to go through medical monitoring for conditions such as sleep apnea at home instead of in a clinic. Medical professionals can analyze a patient’s fitness level by using fitness apps that connect with various health programs and providers to assess the patient’s overall health. Apps such as MyChart on connected devices allow patients to communicate with their healthcare providers, view test results, and share information between providers as needed.

3. Entertainment and Education

Wireless connectivity has completely changed the way we, as a society, seek education and entertainment. Wireless devices now allow us to view movies and shows through apps such as Netflix and Hulu, listen to music through Spotify and iHeart, read books through Libby and other ebook readers, and play a variety of entertaining games, many of them free to play. We can listen to audiobooks and podcasts, interact online, and read our favorite opinion blogs.

In education, the possibilities range from simple skill-building educational apps for toddlers that show the child how to sort colors and count right up to full-blown university-level online courses, some even offered for free, such as Harvard’s free online courses. Many libraries now offer Gale Courses for free with a library card, Udemy courses, and LinkedIn Learning courses, many of which offer college-level instruction on a multitude of topics.

Wireless devices have revolutionized society and become essential tools in our day-to-day existence. One can grasp the importance of these devices by considering their improved connectivity, mobile computing capabilities, and focus on health and well-being. The way we live, work, and interact with one another will probably continue to change and adapt as a result of wireless technology.
