Matteo Morbini, a culinary prodigy hailing from the picturesque town of Lucca, Italy, has been making waves in the culinary world with his innovative approach to Italian cuisine. At just 31 years old, Morbini’s journey has taken him from the kitchens of Italy to the bustling food scene of San Francisco, where his passion for fresh, locally sourced ingredients has captivated the palates of renowned chefs and food enthusiasts alike.

Morbini’s culinary journey began with a bold decision to pursue his passion for cooking, despite familial expectations of a career in law or medicine. “I’m a big dreamer, that’s my problem,” Morbini confesses with a gentle smile. After completing high school, he embarked on a culinary course in Florence, where he honed his skills while juggling work at a restaurant and babysitting to support his studies.

It was during his time in Florence that Morbini discovered his love for Italian cuisine, particularly through the art of crafting a perfect saffron risotto with ossobuco. This culinary revelation set him on a path of exploration, leading him to kitchens around the world, from London to Australia and eventually Japan.

In London, Morbini immersed himself in the rigorous environment of Michelin- starred restaurants, including a stint under the renowned Gordon Ramsay. Despite the intense pressure and demanding hierarchy of Ramsay’s kitchen, Morbini found inspiration in the pursuit of culinary perfection.

After further culinary adventures in Australia and Japan, Morbini returned to Italy with a newfound philosophy about the future of Italian cuisine. Drawing from his experiences abroad, he embraced a vegetable-focused, locally sourced approach to cooking that celebrated the diversity of Italian ingredients.

Morbini’s journey came full circle when he crossed paths with James Beard Award Winner and PBS National TV host Chef Joanne Weir during a visit to Lucca. Impressed by Morbini’s culinary vision, Weir invited him to San Francisco, where he fell in love with the city’s vibrant food culture and quality produce found at local farmer’s markets.

Now, Morbini is set to bring his unique culinary vision to the Bay Area, where he plans to open a novel Italian cuisine restaurant that showcases the richness of Italian biodiversity while embracing the ethos of sustainability and seasonality.
