When asked what inspired her to write “The White Coat Effect,” the author shared that she aimed to juxtapose a complex character facing societal pressures with the basic human desire to find love. The protagonist, Rory Webber, is a medical professional who struggles to separate her identity from the persona she has adopted. Her attraction, and eventual love, come in the form of a man her family restricts her from dating, adding a forbidden allure to their relationship. This theme of love, the author felt, was both highly relatable and exciting.

Rory’s journey from an “ugly duckling” to a “beautiful-but-nerdy swan” and ultimately to a “big cat” surgeon is a central focus of the novel. The author emphasized the importance of portraying Rory’s internal transformation alongside her external one. Despite changing on the outside, Rory grapples with deep-seated insecurities and low self-esteem—a reflection of the pressures many women face today.
