Building and Scaling High-Growth Ventures from Valuable, Potentially Stranded MNC Assets with Innventure CEO Bill Haskell

Innventure is in the business of company building. Make no mistake though, it is not a venture capital company. Instead, Innventure launches lucrative businesses in a whole new way by leveraging novel technologies that multinational corporations (MNCs) have spent millions of dollars researching and developing, but then ended up deciding that the smartest path to commercialization lay outside their walls. 

After evaluating these stranded assets for disruptive market potential and profitability, Innventure forms new companies to tap their commercial potential. Innventure’s team of experienced business leaders fund, run, and scale these new enterprises, ultimately taking them public.

“In 1993, when we first started the very first instantiation of what is now Innventure, we studied the DNA of losing companies and winning companies,” said Bill Haskell, CEO of Innventure. “That enabled us to systemize a process for what I would call the science of company building.”

Why companies shelve profitable technologies

MNCs can spend tens or hundreds of millions of dollars — and cumulatively into the billions of dollars — in pursuit of new technologies to drive their businesses. Yet, even after achieving technical success, they sometimes determine that bringing the technology to commercial success – i.e. establishing whole new enterprises around their discoveries – lies outside their core mission. To remain true to their corporate strategies, they may have to choose between shelving these assets or seeking an experienced external partner.  Enter Innventure.

“It used to be that many of these companies would try to do these sorts of innovative things within their four walls,” Haskell said, “but now they recognize that outsourcing to a more agile company like Innventure may generate profits faster. In this kind of scenario, we are positioned to commercialize more readily, and we don’t ask them for any funding.”

Innventure’s partnership with Procter & Gamble, which resulted in the company PureCycle Technologies, presents one example.

“Procter & Gamble wanted to have access to high-quality recycled polypropylene resin for their sustainability requirements. So, after searching in vain for an acceptable existing solution, they had the determination and foresight to invent a technology to recycle polypropylene that could meet their needs as well as the needs of countless other companies,” Haskell explained. “After significant investment in time, talent and money, they achieved a breakthrough and got it to the proof-of-concept stage. They then wisely recognized that they weren’t the appropriate company to commercialize the technology since they wanted to buy high-quality recycled resin, not be in the recycling business. That’s when they reached out to Innventure, and we started a company called PureCycle Technologies, which has now grown into a public company, which has now built commercial capacity that is about to come on-line in Ohio and in other sites around the world.  Procter & Gamble now has access to that resin — the product that they wanted all along.”

New revenue for MNCs

In addition to preserving MNCs’ strategic focus, partnering with Innventure provides other benefits. Depending on the character of the partnership, the MNC may get favorable pricing, a royalty, or equity in the new company. Ideally, the MNC becomes a channel to the market, either becoming a customer or selling the product to others.

“They can end up with tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars annually from royalties, improved product pricing, equity, or some combination thereof,” said Haskell. “That’s a much larger benefit than just selling the technology to someone else for a half million or a million dollars, which would return pennies on the invested dollars. One successful Innventure company can provide value that is literally hundreds of times more valuable than a one-time sale.”

By collaborating with Innventure, MNCs can increase their revenue, not just once or for a single quarter, but for decades in a continual passive stream.

Successful business creation with less risk

Innventure’s innovative business model is also designed to reduce risk in a number of ways. First, the team analyzes extensive data to identify what the market wants, as well as the product specifications that would meet that demand.

“Typically, inventors invent what they are interested in, which is different from what the market may actually need,” Haskell said. “This is partly why over 90% of all intellectual property ends up lying fallow someplace. The top 100 R&D companies spend approximately $500 billion on R&D annually, yet only a single-digit fraction ends up in commercial products.”

By targeting an existing demand, Innventure ensures a sufficiently large audience for its companies’ products.

“We only work on projects that can achieve at least $1 billion dollars in value,” Haskell said. “Having done this for literally three decades, I can tell you that it’s no more difficult to build a billion-dollar company than it is a $10 million company. You just have to pick the right product into the right market at the right time, so we concentrate on things that can create real value.”

Second, while many — if not most — new businesses rely on aspiring entrepreneurs who are growing into their role, the Innventure team of “serial CXOs,” as Haskell calls them, enjoys 30 years of experience operating and building companies. These business veterans, combined with specialists recruited from the relevant industries, run the new enterprises until they achieve commercial viability.

Third, Innventure does not need to raise outside financing, since it has a dedicated fund for the companies it creates. “This takes the capital risk off the table,” Haskell said.

Relloe is Helping Businesses Overcome Supply Chain Obstacles

This past July, Tesla CEO Elon Musk declared that “supply chain hell” was officially upon us. After a two-month Covid lockdown hit Shanghai earlier this year, this August saw factories across China shuttered due to a lack of power. The culprit? An historic heatwave that resulted in serious drought, imperiling hydroelectric plants. 

The good news is that the 100+ container ship backlogs that bedeviled major west coast ports for over a year have now dissipated. The bad news, however, is that the bottlenecks have simply moved to the nation’s railyards.

According to Edward Routh, founder of manufacturing platform Relloe, the widespread disruption caused by both Covid and China’s recent drought has finally highlighted the importance of consistent and reliable global supply chains. He cites a 2021 survey by Mckinsey which found that 71% of Chief Procurement Officers surveyed now plan to diversify their supply chains, citing a need for greater stability and flexibility amid volatile demand.

“New emerging trends and an evolving retail landscape is resulting in more businesses prioritizing diversification,” Routh observes. “Diversification amongst suppliers is now seen as a top risk for businesses in 2022. That’s why we are seeing companies like Honda and Apple move more of their manufacturing out of China, and into countries like Mexico, India and Vietnam.”

Relloe provides premium manufacturing and logistics services with transparent order management and end-to-end supply chain visibility for brands large and small. Routh says that managing the supply chain has become even more critical of late, as global logistics shift from the efficiency model that began in the 1980s with just-in-time inventory, to a new one emphasizing resilience and reliability. A major part of this shift, he says, is diversifying manufacturing sites.

“There are numerous benefits associated with supply chain diversification, ranging from reduced risk exposure and greater resilience, to duty advantages and radically shorter shipping times,” says Routh, who has been helping clients adapt to the new paradigm. “The supply chain woes have inordinately hurt smaller businesses, who don’t have the ability to stock more inventory or move up their shipments earlier in the year as large retailers have been doing.”

Relloe bills itself as a “full service manufacturing and logistics solution” that guides businesses through the entire manufacturing process with full transparency. Specializing in apparel and footwear, Routh says that his company has been able to help its clients avoid the worst of the logistical issues that have plagued these industries. The platform has thrived by focusing on quality, delivery, transparency, and communication rather than price alone. 

“Often, too much weight is given to the ability of a supplier to deliver the first order at the right price,” Routh says. “However, equal — if not more — attention should be placed on the long term ability of the supplier to produce the product reliably and consistently.”

Unlike consultancies that bill by the hour, Relloe charges a small platform fee on each order. The quality of Relloe’s supply network, which has supplied major labels like Intermix and Ralph Lauren, has helped to build a platform that is both scalable and stable. Orders can be routed to factories in smaller countries like Mauritius and Sri Lanka when disruptions occur elsewhere. The company also recently began working with manufacturers in Peru, which Routh says has obvious advantages for the platform’s customers in North America. 

But even during “supply chain hell,” logistics aren’t the only important issue for brands; another is sustainability. A global backlash has been brewing for some time against so-called “fast fashion,” due in no small part to this sector’s higher levels of waste and perceived labor abuses. And in June, the United States officially banned cotton imports from Xinjiang, China — a major global supplier — due to human rights concerns.

To help its clients stay on the right side of social issues, Relloe subscribes to several global initiatives and standards that address issues of importance to end customers, ranging from recycling to the use of harmful chemicals in apparel manufacturing. The company also has a rigorous onboarding process for its suppliers, conducting multiple interviews, inspections, and background checks with each new partner to ensure best practices and ethical behaviors.

“Today’s platforms must address every point of the manufacturing process, from sourcing the raw materials to getting goods to the point of sale,” Routh says. “Diversifying the supply chain and clearing up its many bottlenecks will take time, but even when we reach a new normal, manufacturing overseas will still be an incredibly complex process. We offer up our experience and expertise to make sure it’s ultimately a rewarding one for our clients.”

Peter Lanza: A Well-Liked Community Leader

Peter Lanza is well known in his community, presently holds a senior position with General Electric and has been described as well-liked by associates. However, Numerous scholarships allowed him to attend the New York Institute of Technology. Therefore, he reportedly enjoyed a lot of popularity and belonged to golf clubs at many institutions.

Before leaving the business in 2010, he had been employed by General Electric. Since the late 1980s and was one of the most significant scientists there. A source close to him said: “[He] is an accomplished mathematician, who has worked on problems of interest to both the military and to his company, GE.

He is a family man and very involved in his community. He was extremely well-liked by his colleagues.” A neighbour in Stamford, Connecticut, said: “He’s a wonderful guy. I mean, he’s smart, athletic -–I think his wife said he used to be an outstanding tennis player. I think they live in the house Peter grew up in, or at least. They did when we first met them many years ago. Also, they had a house cleaning service, and Peter would come back from work, and maybe he would help them. He was very nice, very friendly.”

The neighbour added: “I never saw him as an academic type. I remember talking about the family and how they had sports cars. I think he drove an expensive car to boot camp when he went into the army or something.”

Betsy Davis told the Hartford Courant that she was a history teacher at Newtown High School. When Lanza was a student in 1992. “Peter was quiet and unassuming,” she said. “He was someone who made an impression on his teachers.”

His son, Ryan Lanza, 24, graduated from Quinnipiac University in 2010 with a double major in history and theatre. [EDITOR: the year of Sandy Hook.] He did a stint as a substitute teacher at Newtown High School last year.

Career

Peter Lanza, who is a complete musician, has worked for the company for more than 25 years. He is currently list as a senior scientist in GE corporate research and development.

In the 1990s, he was a program manager at GE’s Global Research Center in Niskayuna, NY. In 1992 he was awarded three patents by the U.S. Patent Office, including one for a laser device that might be use to treat cancer and another for a digital camera memory card.

Mr. Lanza has worked as a research fellow at the University at Albany, SUNY and the Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. He earned his Ph.D. in applied math from UAlbany’s school of science.

Mr. Lanza has appeared in a televised interview to discuss his book “The Big Picture.” The book is part memoir and part commentary on the nature of “art” and technology’s role in producing it.

In a 2009 Q & A with the New York Times, Mr. Lanza said: “I’m not sure I have a particular niche yet. I’m looking for opportunities. I’m optimistic about my future.”

“I like to write about math,” he added. “It’s the only thing I can write about that people will read.” [EDITOR: this article is quite interesting, as it tells us a lot about how math is used in the real world and is essential. In 2012, a young man was able to write a book about it and thus gain fame from it. Is this somehow related to what was going on in his life? Was he studying math? Was he involved with math at some point?]

In an interview with Spencer Soper on Huffington Post, Mr. Lanza talked about his view of the nature of “art.”

“I don’t see art as something that’s necessarily made by people who have a specific skill,” Lanza says.

How do people know Peter, Lanza-

Mr. Lanza is know as a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford. “He is well know in his community, presently holds a senior position with General Electric and has been describe as well-liked by associates.” Present parishioners said they have never seen him involved in any unusual activity.

“We take care of our own,” one church member said. “When you live in the same city, you know these people. We have a lot of families in this church, and I know of no one who thinks Peter Lanza belonged to any cult or that anyone at the church thinks he may have had involvement with Trish.”

Peter Lanza was a bright, talented math major and an accomplished musician. About 25 years of his career were spent as a scientist at General Electric. Playing tennis and golf, he maintains a busy life. He is a skilled author who is presently engage in research for a book on the nature of art.
