The music queen, Lady Gaga revealed she will star in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the much awaited follow-up to the 2019 movie “Joker,” in a new teaser published on Thursday.
According to Box Office Mojo, the first movie’s worldwide box office receipts exceeded $1 billion. It was also nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture. For his work in the film, Joaquin Phoenix received the Best Actor Oscar.
Phoenix will make a comeback to play Arthur Fleck, a failed comic and unstable loner with a clown face who was imprisoned for killing his favorite late-show host (Robert De Niro) at the conclusion of the first movie. Todd Phillips is back to helm the follow-up.
The film is scheduled for release on October 4, 2024.
The “Bad Romance” singer did not reveal what part she would be playing, but the teaser suggests that she will most likely play the Batman villain, Harley Quinn. With Gaga sporting a heart on her cheek, a trademark look for the comic book character, Phoenix, and Gaga dance in the video to brassy renditions of the romance song “Cheek to Cheek.”
Further fueling rumors that Gaga may play Harley, the phrase “Folie à Deux” describes a shared mental illness affecting two or more people. Since Harley was first introduced in “Batman: The Animated Series” in the early 1990s, the Joker has viewed her as an adversarial sidekick, molly, and romantic interest. As was depicted in later comic books, movies, and video games, their relationship was toxic on the show, with the Joker frequently abusing Harley.
Even though she has long been a favorite of comic book readers, Harley’s popularity expanded after Margot Robbie brought the character to life in three Warner Bros. movies: “Suicide Squad” (2016), “Birds of Prey” (2010), and “The Suicide Squad” (2021). The third season of the HBO Max cartoon series “Harley Quinn,” whose voice actor is Kaley Cuoco, debuted on July 28.
Gaga was nominated for best actress and received an Oscar nomination for her performance in “A Star Is Born,” but Renée Zellweger won the award for her work in “Judy.” Many reviewers criticized Gaga for not being nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Patrizia Reggiani in the 2021 film “House of Gucci,” calling it a snub for the actress.
Lady Gaga through the years
Lady Gaga is the stage name of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. Her musical diversity and image makeovers are well known. As a teen, Gaga started performing, singing at open-mic events and appearing in plays at her local schools.
Prior to leaving school to pursue a career in music, she attended Collaborative Arts Project 21 via the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. She signed a combined contract with Interscope Records and Akon’s company, KonLive Distribution, in 2007 after Def Jam Recordings terminated her contract while she was working as a songwriter for Sony/ATV Music Publishing. The Fame, Gaga’s debut studio album, and its number-one songs “Just Dance” and “Poker Face,” helped her become well-known the following year. Later, the album was reissued with the EP The Fame Monster (2009), which gave rise to the hit singles “Bad Romance,” “Telephone,” and “Alejandro.”
