The New York Fashion Week returned in a big way, with five-and-a-half days of live runway shows in famous spots around the city. Designers like Gabriela Hearst, Prabal Gurung, LaQuan Smith, Collina Strada, and Batsheva showed their clothes.
At the 2023 New York Fashion Week, Wes Gordon, the creative director of Carolina Herrera, showed a collection of lush florals inspired by “The Secret Garden” at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. Meanwhile, Victor Glemaud showed knits on rollerskating models at the famous rink at Rockefeller Center. Ulla Johnson took over the Beaux Arts Court at the Brooklyn Museum, while Jason Wu’s collection of beaded gowns and digital prints was shown on Pier 17 at the South Street, with a view of the East River.
On the other hand, Tommy Hilfiger worked with British designer Richard Quinn to create a modern take on classic Americana on the Brooklyn waterfront, with the New York skyline in the background. The show was a tribute to Andy Warhol’s Factory studio, which used to be a big deal in the city. Kris Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian, Travis Barker, John Legend, and Kate Moss were all there, and Moss watched her daughter Lila walk the runway. Later, Barker joined the stage to play the drums at the end of the models’ last walk.
Gabriela Hearst held an airy warehouse show at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Resistance Revival Chorus performed the whole show in white on a gold-streaked runway and gave a joyful live performance. The ancient Greek poet Sappho was the inspiration for the collection. Black, white, and gold were the main colors, with pops of red and yellow in the form of swirling fire patterns.
Hearst told CNN that the chorus gave the song a sense of “femininity, strength, and joy.”
Proenza Schouler’s show on Friday, which had an all-star cast, set the tone for the rest of the New York Fashion Week. It featured slouchy, but tailored summer looks with fringe, crocheted details, and sheer fabrics. Arca, Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and Anok Yai were others who walked the runway.
Lila Moss was joined by Julia Fox, Precious Lee, Winnie Harlow, and Hari Nef at the Tommy Hilfiger show on Saturday. Harlow was one of many famous models at the Sergio Hudson show, which also included Chanel Iman, Veronica Webb, and Aoki Lee Simmons. In addition, Ella Emhoff walked in Prabal Gurung’s fun show, and Lil Nas X, now the global brand ambassador for Coach, walked the runway for the first time in a black leather vest and jelly sandals.
Kate Beckinsale closed the Naeem Khan show in a two-piece, sparkled metallic outfit. This was another surprise appearance by a famous person.
New York fashion week is back
Many people were happy to see New York Fashion Week back after February’s shows were ruined by the Covid-19 Omicron variant, which caused big names like Tom Ford to cancel at the last minute and many labels to switch to digital presentations.
During the New York Fashion Week, it felt like a party because many designers got ideas for their collections from disco glam and 1970s silhouettes. Then, during his glitzy Financial District runway show, Ford returned to his closing duties by throwing the party and the party after the party. The Hadid sisters walked the runway for men’s and women’s clothes. There were a lot of sequins on the gowns and suits, as well as high-sheen fabrics, embroidered velvet, and lace-lined thongs. Some famous people who came were Madonna, Chris Rock, Erykah Badu, Ciara, Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz Beckham.
With a little touch of digital
Even though most shows are back to being in person, the digital influence of the last two and a half years is here to stay. Hilfiger and Gordon worked with the video game platform Roblox to give their real-world collections a place in the “metaverse.” The Hilfiger show was live-streamed as part of the word “Tommy Play,” A dress worn by Karlie Kloss by Carolina Herrera was made available as a limited-edition item for players’ avatars.
