The world’s richest man and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, had twins with a Neuralink executive last year, according to a Wednesday Insider article.

According to documents obtained by Insider, Musk secretly fathered the children with Shivon Zilis, who works for Musk at the company that aspires to create an implantable computer chip for the human brain, on May 24. Musk proudly displayed this tweet at the top of his more than 100 million followers’ Twitter feed.

The source was able to get court documents relating to the legal name changes for the kids, which included Zilis’ middle name as well as Musk’s last name. Although CNN Business was unable to independently verify the information in the documents, a Travis County, Texas, court docket that the company was able to obtain showed that the name change petition was initially filed in April 2022 and approved in early May, which is consistent with the dates on the documents made public by Insider. In those records, Musk is identified as the father and Zilis is identified as the mother. The court’s seal is also present.

Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink personnel were contacted for comment, but Musk did not answer right away.

Musk reiterated his position on birth rates on Twitter on Thursday morning, seemingly acknowledging the news item. I’m trying to help with the underpopulation situation, he tweeted. The greatest threat to society, by far, is a collapse in the birthrate.

Musk tweeted a few minutes later, “I hope you have large families and congratulations to those who already do!”

According to her LinkedIn profile, Zilis has been associated with Musk professionally since at least April 2016, when she joined OpenAI as an advisor. A nonprofit research facility with the declared goal of “ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of mankind,” OpenAI, of which Musk is one of the cofounders, was established in 2015.

Musk held a live-streamed presentation in August 2020 to demonstrate how Neuralink’s technology was developing after being implanted in a pig. After placing its chips in monkeys’ brains, Neuralink claimed almost a year later that the animals could play Pong. Neuralink has recently had to respond to questions about its testing procedures, disputing accusations of animal cruelty while revealing earlier this year that monkeys have died as part of the research.

She began working for both Tesla and Neuralink in May 2017, according to Zilis’ LinkedIn, and she is currently a director of operations and special projects at Neuralink. Zilis joined the OpenAI board of directors in 2020. Before working for firms led by Musk, Zilis held positions at IBM and a Bloomberg venture capital fund, earning her a spot on Forbes’ 2015 list of the world’s 30 under 30 in venture capital. At least two more organizations focused on artificial intelligence have had her participate on their boards. An inquiry for comment was not immediately answered by Zilis.

It is thought that Musk is the father of a second set of twins. Prior to welcoming triplets two years later, Musk and his first wife, Justine, welcomed twins in 2004. (The two were married from 2000 until 2008; they lost their first child. Justine, an author, is well-known for her 2010 article for Marie Claire magazine describing what it was like to be married to Musk and then divorce him.) Later, musician Claire Boucher, also known as Grimes, and Musk gave birth to two children. Then, in December 2021, a surrogate delivered their second child.
