Dream Theater has officially declared that their original drummer, Mike Portnoy, is rejoining the band. Portnoy will collaborate once again with guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung, the original members with whom he founded the band at Berklee College of Music in 1985. The band also includes long-standing members James LaBrie on vocals and Jordan Rudess on keyboards. The newly reassembled Dream Theater is set to enter the recording studio soon to commence work on their 16th studio album, which will be their first project with Portnoy since the 2009 album “Black Clouds & Silver Linings.”
Mike Mangini, who had been the drummer for Dream Theater since Portnoy’s departure in 2010, will be stepping down. Mangini expressed understanding for the band’s decision and gratitude for the experiences he had while part of the group. He also thanked the fans for their support and wished the band well.
John Petrucci also shared his thoughts, expressing gratitude for Mangini’s contributions and excitement about Portnoy’s return. He mentioned that he’s looking forward to the renewed energy and passion that Portnoy will bring to the band.
Mike Portnoy himself is thrilled to be rejoining Dream Theater, citing the shared history and musical journey that dates back nearly 40 years. He is eager to create new music and perform live for a new generation of fans.
The reunion was not entirely unexpected. Portnoy has been in contact with his former bandmates in recent years, including collaborations on solo projects and supergroups. The possibility of a reunion gained momentum in 2022 when Portnoy attended a Dream Theater concert and later performed with Petrucci on his solo tour.
