Indie developer Sinn Studio Competes with VR Industry Giants

This summer, Sinn Studio dropped the Advanced Combat update to Swordsman VR and brought never-before-experienced sophistication to virtual sword fights. “We released the free update on MetaQuest, PSVR, and PCVR platforms on May 26,” says Almir Brljak, Chief Operating Officer at Sinn Studio Inc. “We also launched Swordsman’s Advanced Combat update on Quest, PSVR, and PC VR.”

With this release, Sinn Studio stakes its place among top developers, but the company hasn’t always basked in the spotlight. Just like the medieval warriors the team created to square off in its virtual realm, this tech startup had to fight tooth and nail for a position in the VR space, battling some of the biggest names in the industry.

Swordsman fights its way to the top

The founders of Sinn Studio — Alek Sinn and Almir Brljak — have been childhood friends since seventh grade. “In an industry most people didn’t even know about yet, I spent a year trying to get the funds to start a VR game on my own,” remembers Sinn. “One day, I was explaining to Almir why the business wasn’t working, and he offered to help with the project.”  

“I trusted Alek’s passion for VR and his ability as a developer,” says Brljak. “Because I come from a business background, I offered to take over the business aspects and let him focus on the creative elements.”

At that point, the VR industry was small, but the team hoped to get a jump on the competition. This would prove to be no small feat. After all, they were lining themselves up against industry experts with 30 to 40 years in the gaming field. The group of friends released three titles on PlayStation: Steam, Viveport, and Oculus. By the summer of 2019, they had pursued a spot in the VR space for two and a half years with nothing to show for it.

“We invested a lot of our time and capital into the studio, and the company wasn’t what we envisioned,” remembers Brljak. “We all agreed the experience had been worthwhile, but it was time to move on. After that, we went our separate ways.”

Brljak knew he needed to dissolve the business but was dragging his feet. “I kept the company running and checked in with Alek monthly. After some time away from the business, I could see Alek was still excited about the industry and that there was a possibility I could convince him to come back. I told him, ‘We know enough now to do this right.'”

The team reconvened to brainstorm a new idea. “In terms of sweat equity and personal finances, we put it all on the line,” Brljak says. “We invested everything in one last ditch effort.”

In 2020, the friends released Swordsman VR. “We had nothing left in the bank,” recalls Brljak. “We held our breath and watched as Swordsman launched to 2021’s third-most played game on VR and the fifth-most downloaded game on PlayStation VR. Now, we sell in over 90 countries. Our full-time team of 13 is self-sustaining through recurring revenue, and we reached this place without taking any investment.” 

What gamer doesn’t love a good comeback story? One spectacular title took Sinn Studio from the brink of bankruptcy to a thriving company. This talented trio developed and marketed Swordsman VR in direct competition with world-renowned brands such as Disney and The Walking Dead. They clashed blades with the big dogs and came away with a spot on PlayStation’s VR Top 10 Most Downloaded Games, ranking as high as #3 in both Europe and North America. What’s more, they’ve maintained this position since launching in September 2020. Swordsman VR is currently available on six continents and in eight languages.

How Swordsman VR vanquishes the competition

The game provides two ways to access combat. First, a campaign map allows players to progress through a variety of factions and thematic environments, each having its own boss waiting at the end. Second, players can utilize an arena mode to customize their combat experience without conquering levels. Ultimately, Swordsman VR is a realistic combat simulator with RPG elements and player progression; something that we really needed in VR.

We’re constantly adding new features. Recently, we added over 1,400 new animations and completely overhauled the AI to enhance the combat’s realism. The Summer of 2022 has been an exciting season of space travel. Entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, unveiled plans for his private space station that will accommodate up to 10 people as a mixed-use business park and exotic travel destination. Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, guided SpaceX to a record-breaking number of rocket launches in an effort to establish a network of broadband satellites. And Billionaire Sir Richard Branson reached the edge of space on board his Virgin Galactic rocket plane, beating Bezos and Musk to become the first space tourism pioneer.

Though far fewer people have heard about it, Tim Chrisman, the founder and executive director of the Foundation for The Future, is also making strides in space travel. Unlike the flashy CEOs and ultra-rich constantly in the media spotlight, Chrisman is proving people don’t need to be billionaires to affect change.

Tim Chrisman dreams of a “boring” future in space

Chrisman envisions a not-so-distant future in which regular people show up to build space homes and plug into air, water, and power supplies. The key to this mundane future, he claims, is infrastructure.  

“I want a future where space is boring,” says Chrisman. “When we think space, we think of a billionaire or rocket scientist. Why don’t we think of a welder or truck mechanic?

Growing up on the edge of the Alaskan wilderness, Chrisman appreciates the difficulties of living in a cold and mountainous frontier without roads, power, or towns. By contrast, survival ten miles down the road in a large city like Anchorage or Fairbanks is easy. “Space is hard today because people aren’t there yet,” he explains. “When I say I want to make space boring, I mean I want to build the infrastructure we take for granted here. I’m talking about the metaphorical roads and sewers that will allow anyone to arrive and put a restaurant or hotel on the moon.”

According to Chrisman, settling the “final frontier” won’t look different from other frontiers humanity has explored in the past. Just like the pioneers who crossed the Atlantic, traveled the Oregon Trail, or came to the wild west, early adventurers have already led the way to space.

“The days of the Apollo missions are behind us,” Chrisman remarks. “Now is the time to orchestrate government and private sector partnerships to underwrite the basic components of space settlement.”

While much of today’s innovation revolves around the fantasies of wealthy space tourists, Chrisman believes in working behind the scenes to create a much more real and sustainable future. Though they may not be quite as exciting as flaming rockets, his projects involving outer space mineral and power reserves, space-based solar power, and wireless power transmission are quietly laying the foundation for future generations of life beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

Who will be involved in space travel?

In its efforts to make space infrastructure a reality, the Foundation for the Future focuses on developing a workforce. Currently, the foundation has a bill pending introduction in the US House of Representatives to fund several million tech-centric and blue-collar jobs in the space sector. 

“Politicians have told us for decades that they care about blue-collar workers,” observes Chrisman. “It’s time to kick start the economy and get people working. Many will need very little training to help us get to space. If you can weld a plane, then you can weld a rocket. If you can fit a pipe on an oil and gas well, then you can do that for a spacecraft’s fuel system.”

Space-based solar power, building infrastructure one component at a time

One necessary component for humanity’s future in space envisioned by Chrisman is power. The Foundation for the Future is currently investigating the capabilities for space-based solar power that could offer a double benefit, providing energy solutions for those stationed in space as well on Earth. 

Harnessing solar power on Earth has historically been hampered by darkness at night and cloud cover during the day, causing approximately 30 percent of incoming solar radiation to never reach the planet’s surface. In space, however, the sun is always shining, and atmospheric occurrences don’t get in its way. 

“Solar panels in space will deliver reliable and clean energy wherever we need it to go,” says Chrisman. “By investing in space-based solar power, people in remote communities around the world wouldn’t need to rely on the grid or local power plants. Satellites, reflectors, and transmitters could deliver this same energy to people based in outer space.”

The concept of space-based solar power involves large reflectors or mirrors spread over a vast area above Earth’s atmosphere. These instruments can then direct the sun’s radiation onto solar panels, which convert the energy into sustainable electric power that can be easily transferred wherever it needs to go. 

“Much of the technology that makes space-based solar power such an exciting possibility already exists,” says Chrisman, “and the advancements we still need to fully implement it aren’t far behind.”

According to Chrisman, the most significant roadblock to life on the moon or Mars is not a lack of materials or funding — it is people’s inability to think of space as real. When he pitches ideas to congressional staffers, the media, and even friends, they assume he is talking about events hundreds of years down the road.

“We’ve had people living off-world aboard the ISS for two decades,” Chrisman clarifies. “It’s wild to think about it that way, but it’s reality. Once we convince people this is happening soon, the next challenge is establishing rules to ensure we do this right. Every time we’ve ventured into a new frontier, someone has suffered. We are planning ahead to ensure that doesn’t happen this time.”

Plug-In or Fill’er Up: The Distance Conundrum

According to CNBC, data from AAA reveals that 40 million Americans are considering going electric on their next car purchases. While electric vehicles (EVs) have always enjoyed a committed following, their popularity is undeniably on the rise as of late. 

“The long-term benefits of driving EVs are crystal-clear for the planet, but people are realizing the benefits also extend to their wallets,” says Judith Everett, President of Drivyn, a company committed to teaching the skills needed to operate self-driving vehicles. “With fuel prices hitting new highs each day, it’s no wonder the gas vs. electric debate is drawing increasing attention.”

Calculating the price of electricity vs. gasoline

Prices at the pump are indeed skyrocketing. Drivers in every state are paying over $4.00 per gallon, and experts warn the national average may soon surpass $5.00. Overall, gas prices have jumped nearly 60% over the last year and are unlikely to fall any time soon. 

Today’s soaring fuel prices means that filling a gas tank costs three times more than charging an EV at home, according to a March report from the Zero Emission Transportation Association. Even when gas prices seemed manageable, electricity was still more affordable. A 2018 study demonstrates that the average yearly cost of operating an EV at that time was $485, while the average cost of operating a gas-powered car was $1,117. A more recent Consumer Reports study reveals that 2020 drivers of EVs spent approximately 60 percent less on electricity than drivers of gas-powered cars spent on fuel.

Determining how much EV drivers save by charging vs. fueling up

Clearly, electricity is cheaper than gas, but the exact amount each driver saves is tricky to determine as different makes and models of EVs vary in efficiency. Just as car buyers compare how many miles a car can go on one gallon of gas, buyers shopping for EVs compare how many kilowatt-hours (KWh) each vehicle uses over a hundred miles. “As a rule, most EVs can go somewhere between three to four miles for every KWh,” explains Everett. “For example, the 2022 Tesla Model 3 RWD’s efficiency is rated at 25 KWh/100 miles.” 

Regional price variations also make it challenging to compare the operating costs of electric and gas-powered vehicles across the board. Both the price of gas and electricity fluctuate depending on location. A 2020 study compared the costs of charging a battery-powered electric car and fueling a gas-powered vehicle from state to state, with varied results throughout the country.

According to the US Energy Information Administration, the average household in the US pays around 14 cents for every KWh, but exact charges for each area can be found on a person’s monthly electricity bill. Charges are reported as cents per KWh. Dividing the total monthly fee by the number of kilowatt-hours on the bill allows people to determine how much they pay for every KWh. 

To translate that amount into charging costs for an EV, car shoppers can multiply the cents paid for each kilowatt-hour by the KWh/100 miles efficiency rating of their EV model of choice. This calculates the cost of driving 100 miles, although this number is still a rough estimate. Being smart about when and where EV owners charge their cars enables them to reduce that cost dramatically. Most peak electricity usage occurs during the day. This comes as good news for EV owners because experts find that as much as 90% of charging is done overnight and at home, whereas charging at public stations can increase the cost.

Comparing the cost of maintenance for gas-powered vs. electric vehicles 

“When totaling up lifetime maintenance costs, electric cars again come out on top,” Everett says. “An EV’s motor has approximately 20 moving parts as compared to approximately 2,000 for gas-powered engines, so replacing spark plugs, topping off transmission fluid, swapping air filters, and changing oil are entirely unnecessary.” 

Of course, basic maintenance such as service checks and tire rotations are still recommended for EVs. According to AAA’s data, the cost of maintaining EVs is $330 less per year than the average maintenance cost of gas-powered cars.

Comparing initial sticker prices of gas and electric cars

In 2021, the average price of new electric vehicles was approximately $10,000 higher than the sticker price for gas-powered cars. “The market for EVs is expanding quickly,” remarks Everett. “A wider range of electric car models and improved battery technology is bound to shrink price margins in upcoming years.” 

Until then, car buyers are mitigating the initial purchase price by taking advantage of tax incentives. Currently, the federal government offers a tax credit of $7,500 to offset the purchase price of a new electric vehicle, and some individual states are offering additional tax incentives, as well. When car buyers research their eligibility for incentives, they can more accurately compare sticker prices. 

The initial out-of-pocket expense is undeniably greater for EVs, but several studies attempt to shed light on whether or not going electric is more affordable over the lifetime of the vehicles. For example, a 2020 Consumer Reports study compares nine electric vehicles with their bestselling and most efficient gas-powered competitors. In every case, total ownership costs for EVs were thousands of dollars more affordable than gas-powered cars.

Adding experience into the equation

Everyone knows a vehicle’s value transcends numbers. Experience remains a vital factor in the electric vs. gasoline debate. Do EVs have enough advanced techoology to satisfy shoppers in the market for high-performance cars? Do they have the seating and cargo space needed for shoppers who want a family car? Do the claims about ease of charging and battery life hold up under everyday use? 

A recent survey conducted by AAA reveals the vast majority of EV owners are extremely pleased with their decisions to go electric. In fact, 96% of those surveyed say they intend to buy or lease another electric vehicle. The 78% of those surveyed who also own gas-powered cars claim they prefer their EVs, driving them 87% of the time. Satisfied customers, thousands in savings, and the ability to lessen the spread of carbon pollution are tipping the scales in favor of EVs for more and more drivers.

The Meditation App That Goes Beyond Mindfulness

The higher the inner energy, the more peaceful you will be. Similarly, the lower the inner energy, the more irritable you become. This may sound counter-intuitive, as many of us tend to associate higher energy with being “amped up” on coffee or adrenalin, or otherwise frantic. But “nervous energy” is one thing, and inner energy, quite another.

Indeed, energy is needed for us to sleep, relax, prevent stress and burnout, stay calm, and become more in tune with nature. When I created an app to help patients tend to their inner selves, what I sometimes call their inner flames, I named it Relaxx — not because they needed to take a nap, but because they needed to relax their minds. Being relaxed is very different from being “low energy.” This explains why athletes and artists perform at their best when they feel truly relaxed — and why they choose to do so deliberately.

The trick is that one must remain present while the mind is allowed to take a break, which enables connection with the inner self. The Relaxx App teaches a number of techniques designed to stoke our inner flame this way, including mindfulness, intermittent silence, and meditation.

It starts recording once you turn it on. This is the process of self-awareness.  Mindfulness and awareness together unlock self-knowledge. They are the means of exploring the inner self, like two keys that together open a safety deposit box full of valuables. 

Socrates famously said that the unexamined life is not worth living. A life without mindfulness is similarly wasted. Yet, not everyone knows how to get there, and like everything in life, being mindful requires practice and patience.
