From movies and TV shows to apps and podcasts, the digital world is rapidly changing and becoming increasingly accessible. As a mother and now a grandmother, Janine Lowy has witnessed firsthand the challenges that can arise when it comes to attempting to monitor children’s access to technology. 

In November 2023, Janine Lowy shared tips for discussing traumatic current events with children. This month, Lowy is expanding on that theme to share a strategy for assessing and selecting media that is both appropriate and worthwhile for developing young minds to consume. 

“The full effects of technology on children’s brains are not yet fully understood,” said Janine Lowy. “Everyone in charge of young people—parents, grandparents, teachers, guardians—is facing uncharted territory in ensuring the kids we love are presented with media that best serve them.” 

Below, Lowy shares some of the strategies and tools she’s drawn from over her many decades as a caretaker. 

Laying the Foundation

It’s crucial to keep the channels of communication open with your children, says Lowy. “Whether it’s to ask for your recommendation on a movie or to share something they’ve seen that’s upsetting, children should feel comfortable approaching you.”

You should also engage with what your children are passionate about. If they’re interested in fantasy cartoons, don’t force them to enjoy classic musicals. Instead, provide age-appropriate recommendations that align with their interests. This is an excellent way to bond and ensures you’ll be in the loop with what they’re watching.

Selecting Appropriate Media

Many of us have different criteria for what we want our children to be exposed to. Some may feel strongly about obscene language, while others might want to avoid any violence. These criteria will also shift as children grow. “I often use Common Sense Media as a starting point in selecting anything from TV shows to games,” said Janine Lowy. The tool offers thousands of comprehensive, age-based ratings and reviews. It allows adults to search by media type, age, and streaming platform, then narrow down the search with optional filters, including content limits and genre. “There are even filters for character strengths—like courage, empathy, or teamwork—and filters for diverse representation or positive role models,” said Lowy.

Lowy also recommends keeping tabs on current events and suggesting media outlets that align accordingly. “Whether it’s Indigenous People’s Day or there is a newsworthy current event, you can sit down together to watch something that ties into the issue,” said Lowy. “Media can be a great way to expand children’s insight and understanding.” 

Addressing an Issue 

Another reason it’s so essential that children trust you is so that they feel safe coming to you in the event they are exposed to something upsetting. Kids are naturally curious; unfortunately, it’s easy for them to stumble onto the wrong website or for a friend to share an inappropriate movie.

If you suspect something like this has occurred, stay calm. Children are very perceptive and will sense panic, Lowy said, which could cause them to shut down. Gently ask what they’ve seen and how it made them feel, and as you listen to what they say, control your own anxiety. Instead, offer gentle support and extra love.

Have Patience

Finally, be patient—with yourself and with your children. The technological landscape constantly changes, and we’re all doing our best to navigate the associated challenges.

The San Francisco Bay Area is about to witness the inspiring journey of Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to summit Mount Everest, through the lens of the acclaimed documentary “Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest.” Following its captivating week-long screening in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Theater in Glendale, the film is set to come back to the Bay Area for a one-night-only screening on February 10th, 2024, at the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael, CA.

The Los Angeles screenings commenced with a memorable event on February 1st at the historic Laemmle Royal, featuring the film’s director and producer, Nancy Svendsen. The evening was enriched with a post-screening Q&A session moderated by award-winning director and Asian World Film Festival programmer Marie Rouhban, who offered deep insights into the making of this remarkable documentary.

The Asian World Film Festival aims at bringing Asian cinema to the forefront in the United States, showcasing films from across the Asian continent to a diverse audience. Celebrated for its commitment to cultural exchange and understanding through film, it offers a unique platform for filmmakers to present their stories, fostering dialogue and appreciation across cultures. Its inclusion of films and filmmakers, like those involved in “Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest,” underscores the festival’s dedication to highlighting talents from Asia, making it a major event in the international film community. They partnered with the film’s producers to provide additional visibility to the Los Angeles community.

“Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest” delves into the life of Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, a figure of immense courage and determination. Pasang’s historic ascent in 1993 not only placed her in the record books but also challenged the traditional gender norms of Nepal, inspiring countless women and girls to pursue their dreams, regardless of societal constraints. Her tragic death during the descent has left a lasting legacy, urging a conversation on the roles of Sherpa climbers in Himalayan expeditions and the recognition they deserve.

The film navigates through Pasang’s extraordinary journey with sensitivity and depth, shedding light on her dreams, struggles, and the indomitable spirit that drove her to the top of the world. It is a story of empowerment, resilience, and the human capacity to dream beyond the visible horizons. It is not just a film but an homage to a remarkable soul whose legacy continues to inspire beyond the mountains she loved so dearly.

Director Nancy Svendsen shared that she spent ten years working on this film, a journey that took her to several countries outside of the US to meet people who had encountered Pasang Lhamu Sherpa during her lifetime. She also discussed her collaboration with several key figures on this film, including established documentary producers Sharon Wood and Christy McGill, Academy Award-winning composer Todd Boekelheide, and renowned editor Jeffrey Friedman. 

Marie Rouhban led the discussion for the first 20 minutes, and the audience was then able to ask Nancy questions directly for another 20 minutes. 

For those in the Bay Area, the upcoming screening at the Smith Rafael Film Center is a unique opportunity to experience this powerful documentary. It will be screened on Saturday, February 10th at 4:30 PM with a Q&A to follow with Director Nancy Svendsen.

The International Art Museum of America (IAMA), located in downtown San Francisco’s Central Market area, held a day-long art, music, and fundraising event, “Illuminating,” on January 6. The event, conducted together with the Firefly Youth Network, was the first gathering of the museum’s International Art Forum for 2024. The day’s event included youth art exhibitions and performances of tea ceremony, calligraphy and music, and attracted a large crowd from local and international audiences. The President of the Museum, Mr. KC Hsieh, accompanied by several new members of the Museum’s board, including Professor Gregory Noble and Ms. YW Peng, and honored guests, including Mr. Matt Dorsey, the City Supervisor of San Francisco’s District 6, jointly celebrated the event, marking a bright new beginning to the year 2024!

The International Art Museum of America, praised as a “Hidden Jewel” of San Francisco by the late Mayor Ed Li, was established in 2010 with a mission to make art appreciation and education accessible to all. The museum covers over 25,000 sq. ft of permanent art galleries and temporary exhibition halls. Its collections include over 300 precious permanent art pieces by world-renowned artists from 12 countries, including Algeria, Belgium, China, England, France, Germany, Norway, and the United States, spanning from the 16th Century to the present day. The museum has been an active member of the Central Market community, providing art programs for schools and local communities, as well as serving as a global forum for appreciating art and culture. The 16 styles of artworks exhibited by one artist, H. H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, are unprecedentedly striking in their wide variety of techniques, media, and subject matter. In the gallery of Professor Yuhua Shouzhi Wang, the lifetime Chairperson of IAMA, who had a Solo Exhibition in the Palace Museum of the Louvre, Paris, in 2019, visitors are able to gain a comprehensive view of her highly praised artwork.

This first International Art Forum, “Illuminating,” was brought forth by a youth artists group from Canada called Firefly Youth Network (FYN), whose mission is to apply their artistic talents to ignite positive changes in the community. The President, Gabriel Wang, was brought to the museum ten years ago when he was only a young boy and was deeply moved by its humane mission. Today, as a 16-year-old musician, he said, “I am very proud to bring my teammates in the Firefly Youth Network to come and perform at IAMA. It is very meaningful to me personally to be able to contribute to fundraising to sustain this mission that I deeply share, to spread art to all.” The talents of the young artists and performers were fully exhibited in paintings from oil, brush, and ink, and from computer-generated to abstract to cartoons. Musical performances included opera, instrumental performances, rap, comedy, and more. Illuminating the museum with their individual talents like glittering fireflies, together they heralded a bright future for the community! The day’s event successfully raised $29,000 for the museum’s continuing efforts to promote art and education.

The Firefly Youth Network’s dedication to using art to fulfill social responsibilities highlights the significance of the young generation’s contribution to society. With its International Art Forum program, the International Art Museum of America is paving the way for the advancement of art by nourishing the talents of future generations.
